Just One of those Days

It's amazing how many times I've heard that phrase as a droopy looking swimmer (or parent) comes sliding through the door into Highland pool. I'm tired. My suit's wet. My cap smells funny. My tummy's been doing loop-de-loops all afternoon. It's just one of those days.

I feel ya.

I have those days, too. Sometimes, I even have those weeks. And then I have one of those days (like today) that turns out to be something else. I walked into the pool and thought to myself, “What kind of coach am I going to be today? Am I the super friendly, silly, smiley coach who has athletes who can do no wrong? Or am I the super nasty coach with the perma-scowl ready to crack down at even the slightest indication of slacking?”

The world isn't black-and-white, so I sat somewhere in the middle—dancing happily along the deck as my swimmers turned pink the face with hard work. There is nothing as satisfying as seeing your athletes push themselves in practice and still get out of the water with smiles on their faces. Even if the smile is partnered with gasps, grunts and sighs. The day was filled with the air of hard work—both in my day job and at the pool. Just one of those days turned into a day of accomplishment.
